your custom family session experience
You booked your photo session, what's next? Let's take some time to go through everything. from wardrobe to how to get your kids (and Dad!) ready for the family shoot.
what to expect and what our session will be like
The goal of each family photography session is to provide you with images that capture the little moments while you interact with your loved ones authentically. A session typically begins with a few posed portraits. After we capture those "classic" portraits, our session will become more relaxed to give you a chance to have fun as I take candid and honest photographs of your family. If you have trouble being in front of the camera, don't worry! I am here to guide you and direct you through the entire session to capture authentic and emotive moments that happen naturally.
I aim to capture moments of your family interacting with each other in various parings, as well as each person individually. I’ll be sure to capture parents sharing tender moments with their children, siblings being silly together, and parents individually showing the spark that initially brought them together.
Together, we will decide on the best location for your photos. Amsterdam has some incredible urban locations that provide endless portrait possibilities. You should choose a location that fits your style and personality. Here you can read about some locations I love to shoot at regularly.
This article will help you to decide what type of location is best for your family. I am always open to new locations as well.
Family sessions last up to one hour. I shoot primarily with natural light, which means if we are shooting outside we will shoot either earlier in the morning or a couple hours before sunset when the lighting is most ideal. If you choose to have your session at home I shoot those mid morning to early afternoon, because that is when homes are usually lit up the best. If you want to have images nicely lit with a beautiful flare in the background you might be willing to book your session in the evening. The time of day your session takes place has a huge impact. Kids can have a late nap or some down time before their evening session.
what to wear
There is no dress code, the most important is to feel comfortable and be yourself! Dress your best in your own style.
Here you can read more about how to select what your family should wear for a family photo session.
Children are not usually fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we just give the children time to relax and try to capture their natural self. It is absolutely fine if your child is running about and active, I will manage to get a few portraits while they're busy playing and exploring. To get the family shots, I usually direct the adults to simply "be" with the child and we go from there.
Make sure your little one has rested and has had adequate snacks and water. We can take breaks for snacks and play, however I will probably still shoot during the breaks. Bring dry, non messy snacks so their little faces stay clean during the session. Prepare the child for the session by letting them know that a friend will be taking some photos of them, it's best not to surprise them.
please be ready to start on time
This is important to remember that our session is scheduled according to light. It is important that we start on time. Please plan for traffic or parking constraints. It's best to arrive earlier.
I can't wait to capture your family! Do not hesitate to ask me any questions you have. See you soon!
